Earmaster Pro 5 Review
Every musician at one point or another has been frustrated trying to learn a new piece or improvising. It feels forced and we’re out of our element because we don’t have a good frame of reference. Too often, the culprit is a lack of music theory fundamentals. I have recently tested an excellent downloadable ear training software suite called EarMaster Pro 5 which can transform your musical abilities in only minutes per day.
EarMaster Pro 5 Lessons
The 12 modules covered in EarMaster Pro 5 are:
- Interval comparison
- Interval identification
- Interval singing
- Chord identification
- Chord inversions
- Chord progressions
- Scale identification
- Rhythm reading
- Rhythm imitation
- Rhythm dictation
- Rhythm correction
- Melodic dictation
EarMaster Gives Instant Feedback
As you work your way through the lessons, you are asked questions and you receive instant feedback on your progress. When you finish a lesson you are told if you should continue on, repeat the same lesson or go back to an earlier lesson again. That way, you’re not going to keep making the same mistake over and over until it causes you big problems in later lessons. You’re never left guessing how you’re doing. Plus, it keeps detailed statistics on your overall progress.
Lessons That Grow As You Do
EarMaster Pro includes two advanced tutor programs that will increase the level of complexity as you improve. No one size fits all here. The standard tutor has 440 lessons which start out for complete beginners and progress right through advanced. That way, you’ll never need another ear training software package. The jazz tutor is for the jazz musician and adds an additional 211 lessons using swing rhythms and jazz chords. You can even repeat lessons because they change every time. Very cool!
Interact In A Number Of Ways
EarMaster Pro allows you to utilize the program’s own sound bank to make the lessons more like doing them on your own instrument. Plus, you can use MIDI to play your answers or to play them back through.
My Final Recommendation
If you are serious about growing as a musician, this is the only product you need to look at. It is available for Mac or PC, has a 21-day trial you can download before you buy and support that’s second to none.
I’ve looked at other products which cost much more but the cost to feature ratio and overall quality of EarMaster Pro 5 can’t be beat.

I’m about two thirds of the way through this course and I can’t believe what a difference it’s made in my ability to hear and reproduce pitches, intervals and scales.
Top notch program I’d recommend to anybody looking to sharpen their musical skills and increase their enjoyment of music.
Negative:
It’s not a very good program for beginners.
Doesn’t have a basic note trainer.
Doesn’t even have build in instrument sounds so you have to do with those awful midi sounds.
It’s expensive for such a little program.
Positive:
Records your statistics.
Usefull for students in their 2nd or 3th year I guess
Supports fixed Do system
Hi Mario,
I do agree the program could be better for beginners and that it should have the basic instrument sounds. I think they wanted to use the midi so you could get instant feedback on how you were doing. I don’t agree that it’s expensive. Perfect pitch is twice as expensive with steep discounts. I also don’t agree it’s a “little” program. The breadth of instruction matches any product out there.
Having said that, I will say that I recommend this program mostly for musicians to sharpen their theory skills and not for the absolute beginner.
Do you have a recommendation for the beginner? What is your background?
Jeff
